Linda Thompson is an educator, clarinetist, and
a conductor. During her 38 year career she
taught elementary band (1972 -
1973), middle school band (1974 – 1992), and
high school band (1992 – 2011).
In 2013 and 2014, Linda served as President of
Women Band Directors International (WBDI). She
hosted the WBDI 2003 Summer
Meeting, chaired the Women of the Podium
Project, and as Vice President served
as Membership Chair. In 2011, she was awarded
the Legion of Honor Award from
the John Philip Sousa Foundation for her
support of bands and band literature.
In 2014, she was awarded the Silver Baton
Award from WBDI for her service and
dedication to bands, and in 2016 she received
the Aubrey Penman Retired Music
Educator Award from the Southern Border
Section CMEA for her work with the
Sousa Middle School Honors Band. Linda
developed the Sousa Middle School Honors
Band program for middle schools in the San
Diego area and has hosted this
program for eight years. In 2023 she was
awarded the Legacy Award from WBDI for
her continued contributions to the profession.
Besides conducting the San Diego City Guard
Band Linda conducts the San Diego British
Brass Band, plays with the Germania
Blaskapelle (German Band), has been an
adjudicator for the California Music
Educators festivals and was in the clarinet
section of San Diego City Guard
Band prior to conducting the band. Linda
is
honored to now conduct the San Diego City
Guard Band.
